Safety and Accessibility Evaluations / Universal Design Consulting
We
understand the independence and dignity that living in the comfort
of your own home can provide. As one ages or experiences an illness
or injury, some aspects of the home may become barriers to safe,
independent living. Many of these environmental hazards go
unnoticed by the untrained eye. Accessibility Advisors can inspect your
home for
these hazards and recommend the appropriate modifications to preserve
or restore safety, avoid serious accidents, and prevent the need for
nursing home placement.
Of course, a full assessment of home safety requires that we understand
how you
move and live in your home. With the experience of a licensed and
certified occupational therapist, we will assess your skills and
abilities to tailor our recommendations to meet your specific needs.
Our clients will be provided with a report including information on how
to create and maintain a safe environment to prevent injuries, improve
accessibility and improve independence. As independent
consultants, we
are able to provide you with a range of solutions to meet your needs
and budget.

Remodeling Consultation
If
you are considering remodeling your home and intend to stay there for a
number of years, call us! Too often we’ve seen people remodel
their homes when they are nearing retirement, only to have to do it all
over again after an injury. Even if a full remodeling can be avoided, a
change in circumstances may force the use of bulky and often
unattractive adaptive equipment. If you plan ahead and include
universal design features when you remodel, you can have a beautiful
and accessible home and save a lot of money. We will provide a full
review of your room(s) or home being considered for remodel and provide
recommendations on how best to remodel your home to allow for
accessibility now and for years to come.
Traditional
Occupational Therapy Services
If you or
a loved one is having difficulty performing daily tasks or leisure
activities because of illness, injury, or age-related changes,
Accessibility Advisors can help. As we move through life we develop
habits. Unfortunately, these habits don’t always get adjusted
as our bodies and abilities change. At Accessibility Advisors, we can
teach you new, safer ways to perform daily tasks, reducing your risk of
falls and injury. As experts in adaptive equipment, we can teach you
about items to help perform a variety of tasks such as cooking,
dressing, gardening, and showering. We teach people how to be more
independent in their homes and in their communities. We can help you
improve your mental and physical abilities to become safer and more
independent.
Stroke/Head Injury: The sudden loss
of function after a head injury or
stroke can be devastating. Accessibility Advisors specializes in
rehabilitation after these unfortunate events. Studies have shown that
people have an amazing ability to improve long after the initial injury
(known as neuroplasticity). At Accessibility Advisors, we take pride in
keeping up with changes in the rehabilitation field and with
technological advances that help people to regain or increase the use
of their affected limbs. Even if a brain injury leaves no physical
scars, it can still have a profound impact on the person’s
ability to live a successful and independent life. If you are having
problems organizing your life, remembering things, concentrating on
tasks, and integrating back into your life, call us.
Caregiver Assistance: When we are
caring for our loved
ones, it is all too easy to put ourselves at risk of injury by helping
them move in bed or taking them to use the restroom. If you are a
caregiver, we can teach you
safe and effective techniques to care for your loved one and protect
yourself.
The techniques we teach will
reduce the need for nursing home placement and ease the burden of
care on family members and friends.
Workers' Compensation
We provide an objective and
thorough
home safety and accessibility evaluation. Our report will help clients,
case
managers,
physicians, adjustors and the legal team to decide what equipment and
or modifications are needed for persons involved in Workers'
Compensation claims. Please see the Home Safety and Accessibility
section above for more details.
